Leon
Located in the Pacific region of Nicaragua, the territory was occupied by different indigenous tribes for hundred of years before colonialization. The early towns in the region were Subtiava and Imabite.
With origins dating from the colonization from Nicaragua, the original city of Leon was founded on the region of Imabite, contiguous northeast end of lake Xolotlan, now called Managua. Leon’s founder was Francisco Hernandez de Cordova. However, the original city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1610; and was also threatened by the possibility of the eruption of Momotombo volcano. Therefore old Leon was abandoned and the new city of Leon was established in its present location. This city was the capital of the province of Nicaragua for many years.
Leon has beautiful beaches, breathtaking volcanoes, and geothermal faults used to produce electrical energy, in addition to rich archaeological sites. Recently, the ruins of the old city of Leon, known as Old Leon, are being explored and preserved for the archeological record.
Leon is a charming place for its unique history, colonial architecture, and ancient churches. It is also home of the University of Leon, the oldest university in the Americas.
