Esteli
Located in the central region of Nicaragua, the department of Esteli's name, according to historians, "means River of Obsidian". Esteli is one of the richest departments of Nicaragua. Its location and excellent climate make it the commercial hub of the Segovias.
Esteli also has rich archaeological and paleontological sites. Numerous petroglyphs dating back 800 to 1,200 years can be seen here. These ancient stone artworks can be found in sites such as Las Pintadas (The Painted Ones), only three kilometers to the west of the city of Esteli. In the City of Pueblo Nuevo, fossils dating back 20 to 30 thousand years of now extinct mammals such as mastodons can be found in abundance.
